Q10012 - FAQ: How is traffic calculated?

Traffic is calculated for Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes. The only events that are counted are those messages received and sent from and to a mailbox on the server you are analyzing. You must specify how a multi-recipient message should be counted, either per site or per mailbox.

The same message sent to several recipients in the same site can be counted per site as:

  • one or several events sent
  • one or several events received

In addition, it can be counted per mailbox as:

  • one or several events sent from 1 mailbox
  • one event received per mailbox

Looking at the monthly traffic curve, there is a peak on the curve of the sent messages, but no peak on the curve of received messages. This proves that there have been some multi-recipient messages. The ratio of received/sent messages also indicates multi-recipient messages.

NOTE:  The report on the traffic of mailboxes identifies message originators.
