Why can I obtain different results in a report on mailbox traffic?

Question:

I am testing the General Mailbox Traffic report template and I am surprised to obtain different totals depending on the detail level I select in the Content  tab, even if the "Count messages sent to n recipients" option is set to "once". How come?

Answer:

The Detail level for correspondents options selected in the Content  tab can not only produce more or less detailed results, but also different totals.

For example, you decide to analyze Mailbox A, that sent a message on 01/01/2023 at  01:00:00. It was sent to recipients X, Y and Z (X and Y are internal correspondents, and Z is an external correspondent).
The Detail level for the selection is set to Recipient and messages sent to n recipients are counted once.
  • If you only select the Correspondents (name@domain.com) check box, the message will be counted three times (one for X, one for Y and one for Z): Promodag Reports counts separately each recipient once.
  • If you un-select that box and select Correspondents' domains (domain.com), it will be counted twice (one for X and Y, and one for Z): Promodag Reports counts separately each domain once.
  • If you un-select that box and select Correspondents' address types (Internal, Internet), it will be counted twice (one for X and Y, and one for Z): Promodag Reports counts separately each address type (internal/external) once.
  • If you don't select any check box at all, the message will only be counted once.
